How does Happn decide who you see?

Happn builds your feed from crossings. Its help center explains that every time you cross paths with another member in real life, their profile appears on your main page, whether you noticed them or not. Profiles are listed in date order, and each one includes a small map showing where you crossed paths and how many times. The Happn Map gathers crossings from the previous 14 days.

The app doesn’t need to be open. Happn says it keeps registering crossings in the background as long as location is switched on.

Preferences cut both ways. Happn calls them completely reciprocal: a member is never shown to someone who doesn’t match their age and gender criteria. When preferences change, only future crossings follow the new rules. Premium members can add filters such as height, and then only see people who filled in those answers.

Where does Happn show someone’s location?

Less precisely than people fear. Happn says a member’s exact position is never revealed, that the location shown for a crossing is your own position rather than theirs, and that it’s approximate and never shown straight away. A crossing tells you two phones were in the same general area at some point. It can’t place a person anywhere with precision.

Is my girlfriend on Happn? Why a crossing proves so little

If you live together, share a commute, or work nearby, you’d expect to cross paths constantly if you were both on Happn. That’s exactly why a crossing is weak evidence. Busy offices, apartment buildings, gyms, and train lines put large numbers of people inside the same radius every day.

Please don’t try to recreate her routine to trigger a crossing, or follow her to see who shows up. That’s tracking a person, and it can slide into stalking. It also wouldn’t work if her preferences don’t include someone like you.

Happn’s own rules add a few traps:

• Uninstalled isn’t gone. Happn says that if someone deletes the app, their position stops updating but they remain visible to other users, and their account is waiting when they log back in.
• Paused profiles vanish. A paused account is invisible, drops out of everyone’s feed, and shows as “Unavailable Crush” to people who matched with it.
• Hidden profiles stay hidden. When a member taps X on someone, Happn says they won’t cross paths with that person in the app again.
• One account, several devices. Happn lists an account connected to more than one device among the reasons crossings appear in the wrong places.

What can you check on Happn for free?

• Reverse image search the photos she uses online. A Happn profile won’t be in the results, but a reused photo can reveal other accounts.
• Ask a friend who already uses Happn, and who passes through the same places as her, whether her profile has come up. Their preferences have to include her age and gender for that to happen.
• If a friend does see a profile, check for the black certification badge. Happn gives it when a member’s video check matches their photos, and says changing pictures can remove it.

Making a Happn profile to look for her has the usual problems plus one more. Happn only shows people you physically pass, so it would only work if you shadowed her movements, and that’s something we’d never recommend.
