Can you search for someone on Bumble by name?

No. Bumble’s help article on handles spells it out: you can’t search by name, use a partial or similar spelling, or browse other people’s handles. Everyday Bumble runs on recommendations. The People tab is the swipe deck, filled with members who match your preferences, and the Discover tab adds a new selection every morning at 9am based on shared interests and dating goals.

Filters shape who appears. Every member can filter by age, distance (in the countries where Bumble offers it), verification, languages, and shared interests, and members in the US and Canada can add ethnicity preferences. Premium adds advanced filters for more specific preferences.

Location matters too. Bumble takes each member’s location from their phone’s GPS, so who sees a profile depends on where both phones are right now.

How do Bumble handles work, and can you search one?

Bumble now offers optional @handles to members in the US using iOS. A member who has passed photo verification picks a handle, and any verified member in the same country can type that exact handle to open the profile, even if they fall outside its owner’s filters.

• You need the exact handle. Bumble doesn’t allow name searches, near-miss spellings, or browsing.
• Only verified members can search, and only for people in their own country.
• A member can switch on “Hide me from search” at any time, and anyone using Incognito Mode can’t be found by handle.
• Handles can be changed once every 30 days, and the old handle stops leading to the profile.

So a handle only helps if they created one and you already know it. Even then, don’t make a profile just to look. Bumble’s Community Guidelines don’t allow impersonation or misrepresentation, and a fake account weakens your position in the conversation that follows.

Start with checks that cost nothing and stay inside the rules. None of them involve their phone, their passwords, or a made-up profile.

• Run a reverse image search on their photos. Google Lens shows where a picture, or one like it, appears on the open web. Bumble has shut down its web version, so profiles only open in the mobile app. Expect to find reused social photos rather than the Bumble profile itself.
• Ask a friend who already dates on Bumble to keep an eye out. Because Bumble works from real-time location, a friend who lives or works near them is more likely to be shown the profile.
• If a friend does see it, they can tap “Recommend to a friend” to share it. Bumble says the owner isn’t notified, but the link only opens inside the Bumble app, so you’d need an account to view it. A careful written description works too.
• Listen closely to “I deleted it.” Bumble says removing the app, or going quiet for a long time, doesn’t delete a profile.

What’s visible on a Bumble profile, and what stays hidden?

Why might a Bumble profile not show up?

• Snooze Mode. Bumble lets members hide their profile for 24 hours, 72 hours, a week, or indefinitely, while they keep chatting with existing matches. They can show matches an Away Status or stay invisible.
• Incognito Mode. On Premium and Premium+, only people the member has liked can see them.
• Filters and distance. If a friend’s filters or location leave the person out, Bumble won’t show them, unless the friend has “Show other people if I run out” switched on.
• A deleted account. Bumble says a deleted account is no longer viewable, though it can be restored within 28 days.

Any one of these keeps a real profile out of view, so a quiet week of swiping settles nothing.

“It’s just for friends”: what about Bumble BFF and Bizz?

In the US, Canada, and Mexico, Bumble has moved friend-finding out of the dating app. BFF Mode and the Bumble For Friends app have been replaced by a separate app called BFF. So in those countries, a profile in the main Bumble app is a dating profile.

In other countries, BFF Mode still sits inside Bumble, so it’s fair to ask which mode a profile was in. Bumble Bizz, the networking mode, is no longer available, and Bizz profiles are no longer shown in the app.

Is it an old Bumble profile or a current one?

Bumble gives you less to go on than most apps, because it never shows when someone was last online. Look at the profile itself instead.

• Photos you can place in time, like a recent haircut or a trip you took together, outweigh everything else.
• A city or hometown that matches where they live now suggests the profile has been edited recently.
• A bio, prompts, and interests about their current job, pets, or plans are newer than ones about a past chapter.
