POF profile search: how to check if someone is on Plenty of Fish

Does Plenty of Fish let you search for a specific person?

POF has a real Search tab, which surprises people coming from Tinder or Hinge. The catch is what it searches for. POF’s help center presents Search as a way to find matches by the things you care about, such as education, and says it’s available on every membership level, free included. Nothing in its current help pages describes looking up a member by name.

Location drives the results. POF says it uses your location, zip code, and city to find people based on how close they are to you, and it filters by distance only, so you can’t limit results to a state or a country. It also expands a search automatically when it thinks someone outside your age or distance range might interest you, and POF says there’s no setting to stop that.

Meet Me, POF’s swipe deck, has its own age and distance filters. POF notes those filters only change who appears in Meet Me and have no effect on Search, so the two can show quite different people.

Why can POF show you strangers and miss the one person you mean?

Search on POF is designed to keep you meeting new people, so it isn’t built to find one face. Several of its own rules work against a targeted check:

• Recently active members get a lift. POF says its algorithm favors people who are online or came online recently, so someone who logs in once a month can sit far down the results.
• Moves take time to register. POF says that after a member updates their city, they keep seeing people from their old area for a while, because matching takes time to catch up. Location-based results can lag behind where someone actually lives.
• Incognito hides a profile from most people. On POF Plus, Premium, and Prestige, Incognito shows the profile only to people the member likes or messages, plus existing matches.
• A break hides it from everyone new. Where POF offers Take a Break, a paused profile doesn’t appear in Meet Me, on the Discovery page, or in search results.

Put together, a free search that comes up empty tells you very little. The profile might be hidden, ranked low, or still listed under an old city.

What can you check on POF for free?

A few checks cost nothing and keep you on the right side of POF’s rules.

• Run his photos through Google Lens or another reverse image search. POF profiles sit inside the service, so expect to find the same pictures on social accounts more often than the POF profile itself.
• Search the open web for usernames he uses elsewhere. People often recycle a handle, and a recycled handle sometimes leads to pages you can see without signing in to anything.
• Ask a friend who already uses POF for their own dating whether they’ve come across him. Their distance and preferences, not yours, decide who they’re shown.
• Listen closely if he says he “deleted POF.” POF says Android users can’t delete their account inside the app and have to do it on POF.com in a mobile browser, so removing the app may have left the account in place.

Two cautions. Browsing POF from your own profile can leave a trace, because upgraded members can see who viewed them in a list called Interested in Me. And a made-up profile goes against POF’s community guidelines, which ask every member to “Be Real.” It also gives him an easy way to turn the conversation toward what you did.

If a friend spots a profile, or our report flags one, weigh each detail separately. Here’s how we think about the findings that come up most on POF.

The verified badge deserves a closer look. POF gives a Photo Verified badge when a member’s video selfie matches their main photo, and it says changing that main photo means verifying again. A badge beside a recent photo of him is about as close to “this is his account” as a public profile gets. It still can’t tell you why the account exists or when he last opened it.

Could a POF profile show up on a different app?

It can, and that explains some confusing sightings. POF’s Expanded Discovery & Interaction setting lets a POF profile appear in discovery and search on other Match Group services. POF says people on those apps may be prompted to create a POF profile to interact with it. Members can switch the setting off in their privacy choices.

So if a friend is sure they saw him on another Match Group app, it may be his POF profile showing there. The useful question for him is about the POF account itself.
