How does search work on Match.com?

Match’s Search page starts from the preferences in your own profile, then lets you edit the age range and location and add filters for appearance, interests, background, lifestyle, and keywords. Some advanced filters are reserved for Platinum subscribers. Ticking “Online Now” limits results to people who are online or were active in the last day.

Results can be sorted several ways, including Activity Date, Newest First, Distance, and even alphabetically by username. Each result shows a name, age, location, photo count, and activity status.

In select markets Match also offers Free Text Search, where you type what you’re looking for and AI suggests profiles. Match says that tool won’t return results when someone tries to identify or find an individual user by personal details such as a name or social media handle.

What happens when you look someone up on Match yourself?

Here’s the part most people don’t expect. Match says opening a profile from search results puts you on that member’s Who’s Viewed Me list. Match counts views even from hidden profiles, and members with a Diamond subscription can see every profile that viewed them. If your husband pays for Diamond, a quick browse from your own account could announce itself.

Hiding your own profile first doesn’t fix that. Match says a visit made while hidden is still registered and appears in the other member’s list once you unhide. A profile under a false name has its own cost: it means deceiving him before you’ve asked him a single question.

What do the green and yellow dots on Match mean?

Two details from Match’s help center change how you read these. Members can’t switch activity status off, so every profile shows one. And Match says the status can update when someone opens a Match email notification in their personal inbox, as well as when they log in. A green circle may only mean he tapped a “someone liked you” email.

Is my husband on Match? Hidden, private, and copied profiles

Match gives members several ways to keep a profile without being easy to find:

• Hidden. A hidden profile doesn’t appear in search results and new members can’t view it. People he messaged before can still reply, and they see “Profile Unavailable.”
• Private Mode. A paid add-on that shows the profile only to members he contacts with a message, Like, or Super Like.
• Visible again after an edit. Match says editing the text of a profile makes it visible automatically, so a hidden profile can reappear after one small change.
• Shown on sister apps. With Expanded Discovery & Interaction on, Match says a profile can appear in discovery and search on other Match Group services.
• Copied to a new app. Match sometimes offers to transfer a profile to another Match Group service, which Match says creates a second profile there while the Match account stays active.

“Profile Unavailable” has more than one meaning too. Match lists a break to pursue a relationship, a hidden profile, and removal for security reasons as the usual causes.

Why can a Match result look stronger than it is?

Match profiles tend to be long and detailed, and detail feels convincing. A bio about grandkids, golf, and a love of Italy can describe a lot of men in one metro area. Treat the bio as support and lean on photos you can date.

• Old accounts come back. Match says a reactivated account returns to free membership, and its owner chooses whether the profile becomes visible again, so a years-old profile can resurface with years-old photos.
• Photo Verified helps, within limits. Match gives the status when a video selfie passes a liveness check and matches the profile photos. It confirms the face, not the reason for the account.
• Activity is a timestamp. Even a solid green dot only shows the account was used in the last 45 minutes.
