What makes a dating profile “hidden”?

When people say a profile is hidden, they usually mean one of two very different things.

Hidden in plain sight

The profile is live, and other members can see it, but you’d never recognize it at a glance. It might use a middle name or a nickname, photos from a trip you weren’t on, or an app you’ve never opened. Some people set it up that way on purpose. Others made the profile years ago and forgot about it.

Hidden by the app

The member has turned on a setting that takes the profile out of view. Tinder lets members turn off Discovery. Bumble offers Snooze and, for Premium members, Incognito. Hinge lets members pause their account. Once a setting like that is on, the app stops showing the profile to new people, and no outside search can see it.

Which hidden profiles can be found, and which can’t?

Can you find a dating profile under another name?

Yes, as long as the face shows. A dating profile displays whatever first name the member typed in. Someone named Michael can go by Mike, by an initial, or by his middle name. On Tinder, the name can’t be changed once the account exists, so an old profile keeps whatever name was used when it was made.

That’s why searching by name falls short. Tinder says you can’t search for a specific person at all. Bumble’s handle search, available in the US on iOS, only finds a profile by its exact @handle, and members can hide themselves from it. Neither lets you type a name and see who comes up.

We start from the photo you give us and compare it with publicly visible profiles in their area. Then we use name, age, and city to confirm or rule out each possible match. A profile with the wrong name but the right face, age, and city can still come back as a strong match, with a note that explains why.

Why would someone hide a profile in plain sight?

There are several reasons, and not all of them involve cheating.

• Privacy. Some single people use a nickname or skip face photos so coworkers, family, or an ex won’t recognize them.
• A forgotten account. Tinder, Hinge, and Bumble all say that deleting the app doesn’t delete the account.
• Not wanting a partner to find it. Someone hiding a profile from you may change the name and avoid photos you would recognize.

A match tells you a profile exists. The details around it, such as how recent the photos are and which city it shows, help you judge which of these reasons fits.

What about paused, snoozed, incognito, or deleted profiles?

These are the profiles the apps themselves hide. We can’t see them, and neither can anyone else outside the app.

• Tinder: with Discovery turned off, the profile isn’t shown to new people. People the member already liked may still see it.
• Bumble: Snooze hides the profile for 24 hours, 72 hours, a week, or until the member turns it off. Incognito shows it only to people the member has liked.
• Hinge: a paused account isn’t shown to new people, though its owner can keep chatting with existing matches.
• Deleted accounts: Tinder and Bumble both say a deleted profile is no longer visible to other members.

If a service says it can see these, ask how. Getting past an app’s privacy settings would mean getting into someone’s account, and we never do that. A profile hidden today may be visible again later. The 30-day re-scan, a $49 add-on on either package, checks the same apps again a month after your report.

What about secret dating apps on their phone?

Some people look for hidden profiles because they suspect a hidden app: an icon tucked into a folder, or an app they’ve never heard of. We don’t look at phones, and we don’t recommend going through theirs. What we do is check the public side of 12 named apps: Tinder, Bumble, Hinge, OkCupid, Grindr, Badoo, Plenty of Fish, Facebook Dating, Match, Raya, Tantan, and Happn.
