How does Tantan show profiles?

Tantan works like other swipe apps: slide right to like, slide left to pass, and a mutual like is a match. Its App Store listing says it prioritizes nearby users, so who you see depends heavily on where your phone is. Tantan also builds on shared interests, with group rooms it calls Tribe and in-person events.

The current app, published by Hello Planet Pte. Ltd., supports English, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Simplified and Traditional Chinese, Thai, and Vietnamese. Tantan’s international website also links to a separate Chinese version of the service.

Tantan keeps its FAQ inside the app. Its terms point members to a Help button at the bottom of their profile, which means there’s little public documentation to go on.

What changed when Tantan moved to a new app?

Between 2025 and early 2026, Tantan moved international users from its legacy app to a new one in phases, starting with the US, Canada, Australia, and Singapore. Tantan says the old app, tantan 1.0, started coming off app stores from 31 March 2026, leaving the new app as the only supported version.

Two details from Tantan’s notices matter for a search. Profiles, chats, and memberships carried over for people who moved. Members who had signed in through a third-party login had to link a phone number or email first, and those who didn’t could start again with a new account. So a Tantan profile you see today could be an old one that moved across or a new one opened during the switch, and its photos are often the best clue to which.

Why are names such a problem on Tantan?

One person can appear under several names. Someone might use Chinese characters with family, a pinyin spelling on one app, and an English name at work. Members writing in Thai, Vietnamese, Korean, or Indonesian bring their own spellings and nicknames too.

• 王伟 might appear as Wang Wei, Wei Wang, or an English nickname, and all three are common.
• Popular surnames and given names repeat constantly, so a name match on its own means very little.
• Tantan’s community guidelines require a member’s face to be clearly visible in the main photo and ban camera filters that conceal identity. That makes the photo by far the strongest signal.
• Tantan’s terms say each registered user creates only one profile, so a second profile with the same face is worth noting, though it can still be a look-alike.

If your boyfriend travels for work between cities in Asia, or keeps close ties with friends and family abroad, Tantan is worth checking. Start with what costs nothing:

• Reverse image search the photos he uses publicly. It won’t show a Tantan profile, but a reused picture can turn up other accounts.
• Ask a friend who already uses Tantan, and who lives near him or in a city he visits, whether they’ve seen him. Because Tantan favors nearby users, distance decides who sees whom.
• Keep travel in mind. Tantan says its new app updates a member’s location automatically when they travel, so a profile can appear wherever he lands.

Skip the fake profile. Tantan’s rules ban impersonation and false information, and a borrowed identity is hard to explain when you finally sit down to talk.

Why can a Tantan result mislead?

• Name-only matches. With so many ways to write one name, a fitting name is the weakest signal there is.
• Look-alikes in other cities. A face that resembles his elsewhere is still a stranger until age, area, and photos agree.
• Short trips. Automatic location updates mean a profile can show up in a city he only visited for a few days.
• Carried-over profiles. Profiles that moved to the new app kept their details, so their photos may be older than they look at a glance.
