Dating site username search
Username search on dating sites: what each app allows
You know the handle they use everywhere else. Here’s which dating apps have usernames at all, which let you look one up, what a reused handle can show you on the open web, and when a username match points at the wrong person.
Most dating apps won’t let you look anyone up by username. Bumble is the exception: verified US members on iOS can find someone by their exact @handle. Tinder and Match won’t return search results for a name or handle, and Plenty of Fish, OkCupid, and Grindr search by location and preferences. A reused handle can still surface public profiles.

Which dating apps have usernames, and can you search them?
Some apps give every member a username, some make a handle optional, and some show little more than a first name. Here’s what each app’s own help pages say, and whether another member can use that name to find someone.
Usernames and handles on major dating apps, according to their help centers
- Tinder
- Username or handle? Some profiles have a public web page at a tinder.com/@username address. Tinder’s help center doesn’t explain how these are set up today.
- Can members look someone up by it?No. Tinder says you can’t search for a specific person, and its Search feature, in testing on iOS, returns no results for names, ages, or social handles.
- Bumble
- Username or handle? An optional @handle of 3 to 15 characters, for members in the US on iOS.
- Can members look someone up by it?Yes, by the exact handle only, and only for verified members in the same country. Partial spellings and browsing don’t work, and members can hide from handle search.
- Plenty of Fish
- Username or handle?Yes. Its help pages refer to the user name shown with your profile picture.
- Can members look someone up by it?Not described. Search works from your location, postal code, and city, and widens your filters automatically.
- Match
- Username or handle?Yes. Search results can be sorted by username.
- Can members look someone up by it?No. Its US free-text search won’t return results that try to find a user by name or social media handle.
- OkCupid
- Username or handle?A display name, which its guidelines expect to be respectful.
- Can members look someone up by it?Not described. Match Search filters by age, gender, location, keywords, and more, with no name field.
- Grindr
- Username or handle? An optional Display Name of up to 15 characters, emojis included.
- Can members look someone up by it?Not described. You browse the Grid by distance, filters, and Tags, or pick another location in Explore.
- Hinge
- Username or handle?None described.
- Can members look someone up by it?No. Hinge says it doesn’t offer a search option for specific people.

So inside the apps, a username mostly helps if you already use Bumble in the US and know an exact handle. Everywhere else, the handle does more work outside the apps, on the open web.
Can you search Tinder by username?
Not inside the app, and there’s no Tinder user lookup by name, age, or handle. Tinder’s help center says you can’t search for a specific person. Its newer Search feature is built around interests, and Tinder says it can’t be used to find specific people by name or social media handle, to protect privacy and prevent harassment off the app.
Outside the app, things are a little different. Tinder’s privacy policy says members can share profiles with people outside the service using its sharing feature, and some Tinder profiles have a public web page at tinder.com/@ followed by a username. If you already know the Tinder username someone uses, opening that address in a browser shows whether a public page exists. Some of these pages also turn up in search engines.
Treat a page that loads as a lead. It tells you a profile with that username has a public link. It doesn’t tell you whether the person behind it is the one you know, or whether anyone still uses the profile. Plenty of people pick the same short handles, so compare the photo and city before you give it any weight.
How does Bumble’s handle search work?
Bumble is the one big app with a real username search, and it’s narrow on purpose. According to Bumble’s support pages:
- Handles are optional and currently only available to members in the US using iOS.
- A handle is 3 to 15 characters long, using letters, numbers, and underscores. Bumble advises members not to use their full name.
- To find someone, you enter their exact handle in Search by @handle. Bumble says you can’t search by name, use a partial or similar spelling, or browse other people’s handles.
- Only verified members can use handles, and you can only find members in the same country as you.
- Members can tap Hide me from search at any time, and anyone in Incognito Mode won’t appear in handle searches.
- A handle can be changed once every 30 days. The old one stops leading to the profile, and after 30 days someone else can claim it.
In practice, a handle search only works if you already have an honest Bumble account of your own, you’re in the US on iOS, and you know their exact handle. If nothing comes up, they may have no handle, a different one, or a hidden one. None of those tells you much either way.
Can you search Plenty of Fish by username?
POF members do have user names. Its help pages mention the user name shown below your profile picture when you edit your profile, and its reporting guides ask for “the username or profile” of the account you’re reporting. What POF doesn’t describe anywhere in its help center is a way to search by one.
Its search help says POF uses your location, postal or zip code, and city to find people near you, and that search widens your filters automatically. There’s no option to stop that, and no state or country filter, only distance. A POF screen name search, in other words, isn’t part of how its search works.
Profiles can also drop out of sight. POF says a member who uses Take a Break no longer appears in search results, and Incognito, on paid tiers, shows a profile only to people that member has liked or messaged. A POF user name you can’t find tells you very little.
What about Match, OkCupid, Grindr, and Hinge?
Match
Match members have usernames, and Match lets you sort search results by username in alphabetical order. Sorting a list of nearby profiles is a long way from looking someone up, though. Match’s free-text search, available in the US, doesn’t support searches that try to find an individual user by a name or social media handle.
OkCupid
Profiles carry a display name. OkCupid’s Match Search filters by age, gender, orientation, location, keywords, and other profile details, and none of them is a name. Members with Incognito are hidden from anyone they haven’t liked or messaged, and a visitor who tries their profile sees a note that it doesn’t exist.
Grindr
Grindr’s Display Name can be anywhere from 0 to 15 characters and can include emojis, so plenty of profiles have no name to search at all. Grindr’s help center describes finding people on the Grid by distance, filters, and Tags, and through Explore, which shows people near a location you pick. It doesn’t describe a name search.
Hinge
Hinge has no handle to look for. It says it doesn’t offer a search option for specific people, and its Discover feed shows people who fit your preferences and whose preferences you fit.
What can a reused username reveal on the open web?
This is where a handle earns its keep. People often reuse one username for years, across forums, games, social apps, and older dating sites that give each member a public profile address. Two checks cost nothing:
- Search engines. Put the handle in quotes, then try it again with their city or first name. Look for public profiles, old posts, and photos that tie the handle to the person you know.
- Username checkers. Free tools built on WhatsMyName, a community-maintained dataset, test whether a username exists across hundreds of websites. Its maintainers say a site only qualifies if it’s publicly accessible and puts the username in the profile address, so sites behind a login wall can’t be checked. Tinder’s tinder.com/@ pages are one of its dating entries.
Most dating apps fail that test. Their profiles sit behind a login, and Google says it won’t crawl a page that requires one. A username check can map their public footprint. It can’t show you what’s inside Bumble, Hinge, or POF.
Why can a username match point to the wrong person?
Usernames feel unique. Many aren’t. Before you act on a match, weigh these:
- Common handles are taken everywhere. Short names exist on most sites, and almost none of those accounts belong to the person you know. WhatsMyName itself uses everyday names like “john” and “peter” as examples of Tinder usernames that exist.
- Handles get recycled. On Bumble, an old handle is held for 30 days after a change and can then go to someone else. A username your partner used years ago may belong to a stranger today.
- Anyone can type any handle. Someone can pick a username that matches another person’s on purpose, which is why Bumble asks members to report handles used to impersonate them.
- Old accounts linger. A forgotten profile on a site that keeps inactive accounts can match a handle from a decade ago.
A rough guide to weight: a rare handle plus the same photo plus the same city is a strong match. A rare handle alone is a reason to look closer. A common handle alone is close to nothing.
What should you search with instead of a username?
Use the details that actually show on dating profiles. A clear, recent photo of their face does the most work, because a face looks the same on every app even when the name and handle change. Add the city they live or work in, plus their name and age range if you know them.
That’s what CheaterBusting checks. We compare one clear photo with publicly visible profiles on up to 12 named dating apps near the city you give us: Tinder, Bumble, Hinge, OkCupid, Grindr, Badoo, Plenty of Fish, Facebook Dating, Match, Raya, Tantan, and Happn. Every possible match comes with a confidence note, and we never contact the person.
It’s one payment: $119 for 4 apps (Tinder, Bumble, Hinge, and Badoo) or $169 for all 12, plus optional add-ons: Express delivery ($39) and a 30-day re-scan ($49). Checkout shows your guaranteed report date before you pay, and a late report means a full refund. If you know their name too, our guide to searching dating sites by name explains how it helps confirm a photo match.
