PI vs dating app search

Private investigator vs dating app search: which one answers your question?

A private investigator and a dating-app search look at different things and cost very different amounts. Here’s what PIs charge according to published cost guides, what the law stops them doing, and where a one-time search fits.

A private investigator watches what a person does offline. Published cost guides put PI rates around $110 an hour on average, and $800 to $1,200 a day for infidelity surveillance. A dating-app search answers a narrower question: is there a dating profile that matches them? CheaterBusting checks up to 12 apps for that, with a one-time payment from $119. [1] [2] [7]

How it works

Three steps. About two minutes of your time.

  1. 1

Tell us who to look for

One clear photo and the city they live or work in is enough to start. Their name and age help us rule out look-alikes.

  2. 2

We check every app in their area

We search Tinder, Bumble, Hinge, Match, and every other app you pick for profiles near that city, with the same checks on each one.

  3. 3

    Read your private report

Any matching profiles, how sure we are about each one, and what we couldn’t confirm. Emailed to you by a guaranteed date.

How much does a private investigator cost for a cheating spouse?

Most investigators bill by the hour or by the day, plus expenses. Two widely used cost guides give these figures: [1] [2]

  • Thumbtack: an average of $110 an hour across the US, from $75 to $85 at the low end to $200 to $275 at the high end.
  • Thumbtack: an average total of $407 per job, from about $200 to more than $800. That average covers all kinds of PI work, including background checks that need no fieldwork.
  • Bark: $68 to $125 an hour on average, with surveillance averaging $95 an hour or $800 to $1,100 for an 8-hour day.
  • Bark: $800 to $1,200 a day for standard surveillance in infidelity or custody cases, and $1,200 to $1,600 or more a day when several investigators work together.
  • Bark: many PIs ask for an upfront retainer of $500 to $2,500 before they start.

Run the numbers on a typical infidelity job. Two days of surveillance at Bark’s infidelity rate comes to $1,600 to $2,400, before mileage or report writing. Thumbtack gives the example of one firm that adds $0.45 to $0.55 a mile for fieldwork, and two firms that each ask for a $1,500 retainer. [1] [2]

Infidelity investigation cost: what makes the bill grow

  • Time in the field. Surveillance is billed by the hour or the day, and no one can tell you in advance how many days it will take.
  • Extra investigators. Bark lists higher day rates when a case needs several people. [2]
  • Travel. Some firms charge mileage on top of the hourly rate. [1]
  • Paperwork. Bark notes that report writing isn’t always included in the quoted price. [2]
  • The retainer. You pay it up front, and Bark says leftover money is returned when the work ends. [2]

Ask any investigator for a written fee schedule before you agree to anything. In California, licensed PIs must give clients a fee schedule or a reasonable explanation of how charges are worked out. [3]

What a private investigator can’t legally do

A PI license gives no police powers. Rules vary by state, and California’s licensing bureau sets out the limits clearly: [3]

  • A PI has no law enforcement authority, even when hired by police.
  • A PI may not pose as anyone other than a private investigator, including a government official.
  • A PI may not enter a private building without the owner’s consent.
  • A PI may not carry or wear a badge in connection with an investigation.
  • A PI may not release what they find to anyone other than the client, though crimes may be reported to the authorities.

Federal law adds two hard lines. Intercepting someone’s calls, messages, or other electronic communications is a federal crime, and the same law covers getting another person to do it for you. Obtaining someone’s phone records by lying to the phone company is a separate federal crime. A legitimate investigator won’t offer to read your partner’s texts or pull their call logs, and you shouldn’t ask. [4] [5]

If you hire someone, check their license with your state’s licensing agency first. California, for example, lets you verify a PI license online. [3]

What a dating-app search does instead

Tinder says you can’t search the app for a specific person, and that holds for investigators as much as anyone else. [6]

CheaterBusting is built for that one question. You give us one clear photo and the city they live or work in, plus their name and age if you have them. We check up to 12 named apps: Tinder, Bumble, Hinge, OkCupid, Grindr, Badoo, Plenty of Fish, Facebook Dating, Match, Raya, Tantan, and Happn. Your report lists each possible match, what lined up, how sure we are, and what we couldn’t confirm.

We don’t follow anyone or contact them. We never ask for passwords, login codes, or access to a phone. Your name is never attached to the search, and the charge shows under a discreet billing name.

PI vs cheater app: which one fits?

A private investigator makes sense when

  • You already suspect in-person meetings and want someone to observe them.
  • Your lawyer has asked for documented observations for a divorce or custody case.
  • The question goes beyond dating apps, such as tracing assets.
  • You have the budget for several days of surveillance.

A dating-app search makes sense when

  • Your worry is a profile on Tinder, Hinge, Bumble, or another app.
  • You want a dated answer for a fixed price.
  • You don’t want anyone following your partner.
  • You want something concrete to look at before deciding on bigger steps.

A calm order of steps

It’s often easier to start small. A search tells you whether a matching profile exists. If it finds one, you have something concrete to talk about, and you can decide from there whether a lawyer, a counselor, or an investigator is the right next step. If it finds nothing, the report shows exactly which apps were checked. That’s useful to know, though it doesn’t prove there’s nothing to find.

If your safety is ever a worry, put it first. Choose a safe setting for any hard conversation, and reach out to someone you trust.

Can a private investigator find out if my spouse is on Tinder?

Tinder says no one can search the app for a specific person, investigators included. A PI’s strength is observing what happens offline. A dating-app search checks the apps against your partner’s photo and city.

Can a PI get my partner’s texts or phone records?

No. Intercepting messages and obtaining phone records by deception are both federal crimes, and the interception law also covers hiring someone else to do it.

What is a private investigator retainer?

An upfront payment that covers the first part of the work. Bark puts typical retainers at $500 to $2,500 and says leftover money is returned when the case ends.

Do private investigators need a license?

Each state sets its own rules. In California, PIs are licensed by the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services, which requires a written exam and a criminal history review. Check your own state’s licensing agency before you hire anyone.

Is a dating-app search cheaper than a private investigator?

For the question it answers, yes. Our packages cost $119 or $169 once, plus optional add-ons. Thumbtack’s average PI rate is $110 an hour, so our largest package costs about the same as an hour and a half of an average investigator’s time.

Will my partner find out about the search?

Not from us. We never contact, message, or warn the person you’re checking, and your name is never attached to the search.

Can I use a dating-app search result in a divorce?

Ask your lawyer. A match means a profile lines up with the details you gave. It isn’t proof of cheating on its own, and courts have their own rules about evidence.
CheaterBusting is a dating-app search service, separate from any private investigation firm, with no link to Thumbtack, Bark, or any dating app. Cost figures come from their published guides and vary by city and case. A profile that matches is a reason for a conversation, never proof of cheating on its own. For lawful use only.
