Is my wife cheating on me?
Is my wife cheating on me? How to tell, and what to do next
Maybe she feels far away. Maybe there’s a name you keep hearing, or a phone that’s never out of reach. Here’s how to read the signs fairly, what research says about wives and affairs, and how to get a clearer answer without snooping.
You can’t confirm an affair from one sign, and many signs have innocent causes. Look for several changes that began together, such as new emotional distance, plans that leave you out, and a phone she keeps close, and notice whether she’ll talk about them. Then raise it calmly. Never install spyware, read her messages, or track her phone.

How do you tell if your wife is cheating, or just unhappy?
From where you’re standing, the two can look alike, and research suggests they’re linked. In a 2011 study of 506 men and 412 women in monogamous relationships, women who were unhappy in their relationship were more than twice as likely to have cheated, and women who felt sexually incompatible with their partner were nearly three times as likely. For men, personality traits mattered more than how the relationship felt.
That doesn’t make an affair your fault, and unhappiness doesn’t mean she’s seeing someone. It does mean emotional distance deserves attention on its own terms. If she’s pulling away, the conversation about why is worth having whether or not anyone else is involved.
What are the signs your wife is having an affair?
These ten are worth weighing. Each one has an innocent explanation, so look for several that started around the same time instead of fixing on any single one.
- She’s pulled away emotionally. She shares less about her day, conversations stay on logistics, and she seems relieved when you’re busy. The innocent version: exhaustion, a hard stretch at work, or low mood she hasn’t named.
- A new name, then a careful silence. A coworker, trainer, or old friend comes up often, then stops coming up, or she gets vague when you ask about him. The innocent version: a friendship that cooled, or one she worries you’d misread.
- Plans that don’t include you. New classes, nights out with friends, or weekend trips appear, and the details stay thin when you ask. The innocent version: she needed something of her own and didn’t know how to say so.
- Her phone became private. Late-night texting, smiling at the screen, angling it away, or new settings that hide message previews. The innocent version: a group chat she’d be embarrassed for you to read, or a friend’s private crisis.
- Small things set off big irritation. She’s short with you over things that never bothered her, or she stops trying to resolve the arguments you do have. The innocent version: stress or resentment about something else, which is worth bringing into the open too.
- Physical closeness has changed. Less affection, less sex, or a sudden shift in what she wants, without an explanation she’ll share. The innocent version: health, hormones, medication, or stress.
- Her social media shifted. A new private account, couple photos archived, or posts that never include you or the kids. The innocent version: a privacy cleanup, or a wish to keep family life offline.
- She dresses for somewhere else. New clothes, makeup, or underwear you never see her wear at home, and extra care before work or the gym. The innocent version: new confidence, a new job, or a fitness goal.
- The future gets vague. She stops talking about holidays, renovations, or anything that assumes you’re together next year. The innocent version: anxiety about money or the future in general.
- Hints of a dating app. You glimpse an app icon you don’t recognize, a statement shows a subscription she won’t explain, or a friend mentions a profile that looked like her. Of all ten, this is the sign you can check without going near her phone.
Watch how you’re reading these, too. Once you’re suspicious, a late text from her sister can feel like evidence. A short, dated list of what you actually saw keeps the pattern honest, and our free quiz can help you weigh it.
What does research say about wives and infidelity?
Most data on affairs comes from married people describing their own behavior to a researcher, so treat these numbers as rough guides. Still, a few findings about women stand out.

The old assumption that husbands cheat and wives don’t holds up poorly in recent data. The latest General Social Survey figures show women ages 25 to 54 reporting affairs at about the same rate as men. IFS cautions that the survey changed how it collected answers in 2021 and 2022, so trends across those years are harder to read.
How can you tell if your wife is cheating without spying on her?
Start with the relationship, then move to checks, and keep everything you do inside the law.
Talk about the distance first
You don’t have to open with an accusation. “I feel like we’ve drifted, and I miss you. What’s going on for you?” invites an honest answer about the marriage and leaves room for a harder truth if there is one.
Look at what you share
Joint bank and card statements are fair to read. Apple says apple.com/bill charges can cover apps, subscriptions, music, and movies, and Google Play charges start with GOOGLE*, so a dating subscription can hide behind a generic line. Our guide to dating app charges on a bank statement shows what to look for.
Check the dating apps for her face
A photo search compares one clear photo of her and her city with publicly visible profiles on up to 12 named dating apps. It never touches her phone, her accounts, or her messages.
Ask a lawyer before you collect evidence
If divorce or custody could come up, a family lawyer can tell you what’s useful and what could backfire, and whether a licensed investigator is worth hiring. Our comparison of private investigators and dating app searches covers the trade-offs.
Where is the line between checking and spying?
It’s easy to assume that paying for her phone makes it fair game. It doesn’t give you permission to read her messages. Intercepting someone’s electronic communications is a federal crime punishable by up to five years in prison (18 U.S.C. § 2511), and getting into stored messages without authorization is a separate federal offense (18 U.S.C. § 2701). Neither statute has an exception for spouses. Rule these out:
- Installing a monitoring app. The FTC calls this stalkerware and warns it can track location, read texts and emails, and turn on the microphone.
- Using a password she once shared, or guessing one, to get into her email, social media, or cloud backups.
- Pressuring her to hand over passwords or her phone. loveisrespect lists both pressuring a partner to share account passwords and looking through their phone as technology-facilitated abuse.
- Hiding a tracker in her car or bag. loveisrespect lists using GPS to monitor a partner the same way.
Our search stays on the right side of that line. We ask for no passwords and no access to her devices. We only compare what you give us with dating profiles that are publicly visible.
Is my wife on dating apps?
Among adults under 40, married women are far less likely than married men to be on dating apps or sites, but 6% isn’t zero. If a friend says he saw her, or a charge points that way, a search can tell you whether a matching profile is publicly visible.
You send one clear photo of her and the city she lives or works in. Her name and age are optional and help rule out look-alikes. We check publicly visible profiles on up to 12 named dating apps. Essential covers 4 apps, Tinder, Bumble, Hinge, and Badoo, for $119. Complete covers all 12 for $169. Both are paid once, and you can add Express delivery for $39 or a 30-day re-scan for $49. You see a guaranteed delivery date before you pay, and if we miss it, you get a full refund.

How do you bring it up with your wife?
Wait until you can speak evenly. Then keep these in mind.
- Talk somewhere private, at a time with no deadline, so neither of you can use leaving as an exit.
- Start with your own experience: what you’ve noticed and how it’s affected you.
- Ask about the relationship as well as the suspicion. If she’s unhappy, that’s part of the answer, whatever else is true.
- Hear her full answer before reacting. If you need a break, say so and agree on when you’ll pick it up again.
- Skip demanding her phone as proof. It turns the talk into a standoff, whatever the phone shows.
Finding out can be brutal, but most people who go through it are glad they did. In a 2022 YouGov poll, 79% of men who had been cheated on said they were glad they found out, along with 83% of women.
If the relationship involves threats or control, or you’re worried about how anyone will react, the National Domestic Violence Hotline is free, confidential, and open 24/7 at 1-800-799-7233, or text START to 88788.
Can a marriage recover after a wife’s affair?
Some do. In a 2005 study in the Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, couples dealing with infidelity started couples therapy more distressed than other couples. Those whose affair came out before or during therapy went on to improve more in relationship satisfaction than couples without infidelity. It was a small, early study of 19 couples within a trial of 134, so read it as hopeful rather than as a promise.
Whatever you decide, don’t decide it in the first week. Talk to a counselor, alone or together, and to a family lawyer before any move involving money, the house, or the kids. If you’re in crisis, call or text 988 to reach the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, any time of day. If what you found was a dating profile, our guide on finding your partner on a dating app covers the next conversation.
