How confidence scoring works: what makes us more or less sure
Every possible match in your report comes with a confidence note. Here’s what goes into it, which clues count most, and what it can never tell you.
A confidence note rates how closely a dating profile lines up with the person you described. We weigh photo similarity most, then check name, age, city, and recent activity or updates when visible. Clues that agree raise confidence. Clues that conflict lower it. The note measures identity, never guilt, and always lists what we couldn’t confirm.

Which signals go into a confidence note?
- Photo similarity. The strongest signal, because a face is far harder to change than a name or an age on a profile.
- Name and nicknames. Useful support, but common names repeat, and plenty of people use a short form or a nickname on dating apps.
- Age. A profile age inside the range you gave supports a match. One far outside it weakens it.
- City or area. Where the profile says they are, compared with where you said they live, work, or spend time.
- Recent activity or updates, when the app shows them. Helpful for telling a profile in use from a leftover, but never enough on its own.
- Sex and who they’re interested in. These rule out look-alikes before anything else gets compared.
Why does the photo count more than the name?
A name and an age take seconds to change on a dating profile, and someone who doesn’t want to be found may change both. A face is much harder to disguise. So a strong photo resemblance under a different first name can still earn a higher note, while a perfect name match with no usable photo stays low.
How do agreement and conflict change confidence?
Think of each clue as a vote. When independent clues point the same way, confidence goes up. When they disagree, it goes down, and the note says which ones disagreed. Here are example combinations and how they tend to land.

Is a confidence score the chance that they’re cheating?
No. A confidence note answers one question: does this profile belong to the person you described? It can’t answer whether they’re cheating. A profile can belong to them and still be a leftover from years ago, made before they met you, or opened only to finally delete it. Wherever you see a number or a label, read it as how closely the details line up.
How does recent activity affect a match?
Activity signals differ from app to app. Tinder shows a green dot for people online in the last 24 hours, and members can switch it off. Hinge shows an approximate “Active Now” or “Active Today,” which can also be hidden. Bumble doesn’t show when members are online or when they last used the app. So activity can support a match when it’s visible, and a missing signal tells us very little. [3] [4] [5]
What lowers confidence?
- A face that’s turned away, covered, filtered, or too small to compare.
- Clues that point to different people, like a matching city with an age 15 years off.
- A common first name with nothing else behind it.
- A blurry or very old photo from you. A clear, recent one helps most.
- A profile area far from anywhere you said they live, work, or spend time.
