Inside Grindr, a green dot means a profile is online now. After the person closes the app, the dot stays for up to 15 minutes, then the profile shows roughly how many minutes ago they were online. Incognito, a paid feature, makes someone look offline to people they message. You can only see any of this from inside the app, and it describes one moment, never a pattern.
If you’re here, you probably saw something that scared you, or you’re afraid of what you might find. Let’s slow it down and look at what Grindr actually shows.
What does the green dot on Grindr mean?
Grindr’s help center says that a green dot on a profile in the Grid or an inbox means that person is online. The dot switches on when someone opens the app, unless they’re using Incognito.
Once they close the app, the dot stays for up to 15 minutes. After that, the profile shows a rough number of minutes since they were last online. Grindr also says a profile typically stays visible in the Grid for up to 1 hour after the app closes, and sometimes up to 2 hours.
That’s the whole story. Someone opened the app in the last hour or two. A dot says nothing about who they talked to, how long they stayed, or why they opened it.
There’s one more detail worth knowing. Grindr says that replying to a message through a notification (Quick Reply on iPhone) updates location and online status the same way opening the app does. So a person who answered one chat from a notification can show a green dot without browsing at all.
Can someone hide that they’re online?
Yes, and that makes “offline” a weaker signal than it looks.
Incognito is part of Grindr Unlimited. It hides a profile from the Grid while the member keeps using the app. They appear offline to people they tap or message, and they don’t show up on anyone’s Viewed Me list. Members can also turn off Show My Distance and the Viewed Me list in settings.
So a profile that never shows a dot might belong to someone who isn’t using it. It might also belong to someone who is. You can’t tell which from the outside.
What do the Online and Fresh filters tell you?
Grindr’s Filters include an Online option that shows only people who are currently online. That’s the same green-dot information in list form.
Fresh is different. To count as Fresh, a person must have been online in the past hour and also have created their profile in the last 72 hours or uploaded a new photo in the last 24 hours. If a profile turns up under Fresh, it’s new or it has new photos. It isn’t a sign of heavy use.
Why does “active” prove so little?
Here’s how to read the common things you might see or hear about.
| What you saw | What it can mean | What it can’t tell you |
|---|---|---|
| A green dot | The person opened the app, or replied from a notification, in the last few minutes | Who they talked to, or whether it was a one-off |
| A minutes-ago label | They were online roughly that long ago | Whether they’re still there or came back |
| A profile gone from the Grid | It was deleted, banned, or the member blocked you, or they went Incognito | Which one it was. Grindr says it can’t confirm or deny these |
| A screenshot a friend sent | What the friend’s phone showed at that moment | When it was taken, unless it’s dated |
| A profile that is still there | The account exists | That the person has used it lately |
That last row matters. Grindr says removing the app from a phone doesn’t delete the profile. The member has to delete it in settings. A profile can sit there for a long time after someone stopped caring about it.
Before you read anything into a dot, also check that the profile is really them. Faces and names are optional on Grindr, so wrong matches happen. Activity on a stranger’s profile means nothing about your partner.
Distance has the same problem. The number on a profile is measured from the phone looking at it, so it shifts with every viewer. Our guide to what Grindr distance and location clues can and can’t tell you covers it in detail.
Can you check this from outside the app?
No. These signals appear to other members inside Grindr. Grindr profiles aren’t on the open web, so a search engine won’t show them. A website that promises someone’s Grindr “last seen” time isn’t using a feature Grindr describes. Never type your Grindr login into one.
CheaterBusting can’t see a dot either. We don’t log in to anything, we don’t track phones or locations, and we can’t tell you whether someone is online right now. When a possible match shows a recent update we can see, the report notes it as a supporting detail and says plainly that it isn’t proof.
If you want a second dated look, the 30-day re-scan checks the same apps again a month after your first report and sends a second report. It’s a snapshot twice, not a live feed. Our page on one-time search versus monitoring explains the difference.
Should you open Grindr to watch your partner?
We’d skip it. Making a profile to look around means lying to your partner and to the app. Grindr’s Viewed Me list shows who looked at a profile in the past 7 days, so a throwaway account can get noticed. It also tends to turn into checking all day, because a dot disappears and reappears and each look raises the next question.
Try this instead. Ask yourself what you would do if you saw a dot. If the answer is “talk to them,” you can have that conversation now. The dot won’t make it easier.
What are better ways to find out?
- Ask directly. Pick a calm moment. Say what you’re worried about and what you’ve noticed.
- Check shared money. Paid Grindr plans show up on card and app-store statements. If you share an account, our page on dating app charges on a bank statement shows what to look for. Only look at accounts that are yours too.
- Run a private check. A Grindr profile search tests whether a profile matching your partner’s photo and city exists, and checks up to 11 other apps in the same report. It never says whether someone is on the app at this minute.
Our guide to how to catch a cheater on dating apps covers all the lawful options side by side.
Whatever you find, keep it between the two of you. Telling anyone else that your partner is on Grindr can put them at risk, and using a result to out, threaten, or pressure someone is not allowed under our lawful-use rules.
FAQ
Does a green dot mean they’re talking to someone?
No. It means the app was opened, or a chat was answered from a notification. It doesn’t show who they were talking to or whether they were talking to anyone.
Can I see when someone was last on Grindr from outside the app?
No. Grindr shows its online dot and minutes-ago label to members inside the app. Grindr profiles live in the app, not on public web pages.
If a profile vanished, did my partner delete it?
Not necessarily. Grindr says profiles can disappear because they were deleted or banned, or because the member blocked you. Grindr won’t confirm which happened, and an Incognito member is hidden from the Grid too.
Does removing the Grindr app delete the profile?
No. Grindr says deleting the app doesn’t delete the profile. The owner has to delete the profile in the app’s settings, and a deleted profile can’t be recovered.
Is “Fresh” a sign of cheating?
No. Fresh means a profile was online in the past hour and is either new or has new photos. It tells you nothing about intent.
How often should I check?
Ideally never. Each check adds worry without adding facts. Decide what you want to know, choose one lawful way to find out, and set a date to stop.
