How do you find out if your girlfriend is on dating sites?

The apps make this harder than it sounds. Tinder says you can’t search for a specific person. Bumble’s help center says you can’t search by name. Hinge only shows people whose preferences fit each other. So you can’t open an app, type her name, and get an answer.

That leaves three honest routes. You can talk to her. You can look for traces of a profile on the open web. Or you can have her photo compared with publicly visible profiles on many apps at once. Each one answers a slightly different question, and you can use all three.

What free checks can you try first?

• Talk to her. Tell her what you noticed and ask a plain question. Her answer matters, and so does whether she offers to show you her apps.
• Reverse image search the photos she posts publicly. Google Lens shows where those pictures, or similar ones, appear on the open web.
• Search her usernames. If she uses the same handle for social media or games, search it in quotation marks to find that exact text.
• Ask a single friend who already uses dating apps whether they’ve seen her. A friend who sees nothing hasn’t ruled anything out, because apps only show profiles that fit each member’s settings.

Skip the fake profile. Tinder and Hinge both forbid fake accounts in their community guidelines. It also puts your own honesty in question at the very moment you want to ask about hers.

Which dating apps make a profile easy to miss?

Every app decides for itself who sees a profile, and most give members ways to step out of view. Here’s how four of the apps we check handle it.

That’s why we check up to 12 apps the same way: Tinder, Bumble, Hinge, OkCupid, Grindr, Badoo, Plenty of Fish, Facebook Dating, Match, Raya, Tantan, and Happn. We only see publicly visible profiles, so a profile she has paused, snoozed, or hidden can’t be seen by us either.

She says it’s just for making friends. Could that be true?

Sometimes. Some apps have a friends mode, and some people use apps to meet friends after a move. It helps to know how the app she’s on works today.

Take Bumble. In the US, Canada, and Mexico, Bumble moved friend-finding out of the Bumble app and into a separate app called BFF, and its help center says members there can no longer use BFF mode inside Bumble. In other countries, BFF mode is still part of the Bumble app.

If her profile is on an app built for dating, ask what she hopes to find there and why she didn’t mention it. Listen to the whole answer. A friendship story can be true and still leave you hurt that you didn’t know.

What details help find her profile?

• One clear photo with her face fully visible, without sunglasses or a heavy filter. This is the strongest detail you can give us.
• The city she lives or works in, plus places where she spends regular time, like a campus or the neighborhood around her office.
• The first name she goes by, any nickname, and any short form of her name. On Tinder, the name can’t be edited after the account is created, so an old profile keeps the name she used back then.
• Her approximate age. Dating profiles show age, so it quickly rules out strangers who look similar.
• Her sex and who she dates, since apps show profiles based on those settings.

You don’t need her phone, her passwords, or her email address. We never ask for them.

How can you tell if her profile is current?

Next question: is she using it? Look at the details that change over time.

• Photos you recognize from your time together suggest the profile was set up or updated during your relationship.
• A haircut, a job, or a city from her past suggests an older profile she may have forgotten.
• Activity labels depend on the app. Bumble says it doesn’t show when members were last online at all. Tinder and Hinge show recent activity on some screens, and members can hide it.

Our report mentions recent activity or updates only when they’re visible, and it says plainly what we couldn’t confirm.

How do you bring it up with her?

• Choose a time when neither of you has to rush off. Avoid doing it by text message.
• Lead with one specific thing: “I saw a Hinge profile with the photo from our beach weekend.” A specific detail is harder to brush aside than an accusation.
• Ask, then wait. Let her finish before you respond, even if her answer hurts.
• If she says the profile is old or a mistake, ask her to delete the account together. Tinder, Hinge, and Bumble all say that deleting the app doesn’t delete the account.
• Agree on what happens next, even if that’s only time to think.
